No One Likes It But Me
We haven't done this in a while. Are there any names you like that don't get a positive response from people in real life? Are there any names that are mostly hated on BtN that you happen to like? What are they? One of my favorite names of all time is Claudia, but people I know IRL never seem to like it. All they hear is "claude", and it really bothers them. Other names real life people dislike: Kirstin (too masculine sounding, according to my brother), Charlotte (dowdy), Frederick, NN Freddy (stupid), Edward, NN Eddie (also stupid, and old-fashioned), Sinead (too tied to the singer), and Leigh (plain, boring). BtN hated names that I happen to like: Madison, NN Maddie (I know it's popular, I know it ends in SON, but I don't care, I love it), Mackenzie for a girl (I think it's cute), Riley for a girl (I think it's a sunny sort of name), Sunshine, NN Sunny for a girl, Liam (I don't know if this is *hated*, but I know people say it should be short for William), and Jack (again, not hated, but I've heard people say it's very plain). How 'bout you? "What matters most is how well you walk through the fire." -Charles Bukowski

People are nuts, Claudia is gorgeous! Leigh has a lightness to it I quite enjoy.I could write a novel on names that I love that the outside world doesn't. But BtN hated names that I like? Hmmm....I'm not even sure. Maybe:Edna (I think it's super cute. C'mon, Edna nn Eddie? It's jazz-age pertness)
Sunny-without-a-proper-name-to-fall-back-on
...nickname-names without full names (Archie, Ellie, Annie, Rosie, etc)
Baxter and other occupational and surname names (I do actually quite enjoy a good surname name)
Crystal, Diamond, Silver, Goldie, real glitzy downmarket stuff
Primrose (but I'll give you guys that one, it's ridic)
Rex? I can't remember if anyone else likes that one
Wilma? Homer? Barney? Clifford? Wanda? (my cartoon names)
Ralph
Duncan
Muriel?
Delores (not Dolores)
Blanche??
Swanhild
Mildred (there's something gothically badass about Mildred)I dunno I tend to try and ignore the debbie downers, or not share the ones I know people will barf all over.OH! Deborah. I love Deborah, and that's kind of a meh name!

I like Duncan and Deborah :)

I also love Rex and nicknames as full names. There are some surname names that I quite like too.
vote up1
I love Frederick nn Freddy and Sunshine nn Sunny (my daughter and I were just discussing Sunshine "Sunny" and her merits this afternoon, coincidentally). I quite like Claudia as well :)
vote up1
I love Sinead! It's such an awesome name. I also like Liam and Jack. The one name I can think of that no one else likes is Loki. Every one I mention it too just kind of look at me funny. But I think it's cute!
vote up1
Oh, I love these threads!I like Riley for a girl. I just recently allowed myself to embrace that! I also LOVE Sunshine (but not nn Sunny), and have seemed to get a good response on it here.
So yeah, like most of the names I love don't get great receptions:
Channary
Easter
Jochebed
Lalage
Olalla
Shoshana - This might confuse me the most because I think it's GORGEOUSAdoniram
Boaz
Cadwalader
Columba
Ebenezer
Emerald
Enda
Faridoon
Fionnbharr
Gwenith
Hamnet
Hefin
Manley - Come on, people!
Tancred
Tegwared
Yukon
ETA: Meredith / MeredyddThe names I love and would use IRL are pretty normal, so nobody hates them. I have had a few "hmm" faces at Margaret though.

I also adore the name Shoshana and have for years. Sadly, no one I have ever mentioned it to has liked it. I also love the name Boaz.
vote up1
You KNOW I'm all about team Ebenezer and Tancred!
vote up1
I think Easter is cool as a GP. I also like Columba, and Gwenith when spelled Gwyneth. And right now I'm in love with Meredith.
vote up1
I like Shoshana. Wasn't that the name of Jerry Seinfeld's girlfriend? At least a girlfriend he had at one point, I don't know if he's still with her. Prolly not.
vote up1
I love Shoshana and Emerald.
vote up1
Its nice to see someone else likes Hamnet!I also like Ebenezer!
vote up1
I like Easter, Lalage, Olalla, Shoshana, Boaz and Enda. :)

Grover! On BtN and IRL, although I typically get a better response on BtN than IRL. I get why people don't like it, but I went to high school with an Elmo who did just fine so the Grover association doesn't bug me.IRL - Caoimhe and my other Irish favorites that aren't spelled how the sound.BtN - My trendy boys names (Deacon, Boston, Hudson) and some of my girls too (people here are generally not fond of Avielle, Eisley, Afton & Sonnet).
vote up1
I love Grover! AND Kermit. All those muppet names - winners.I like Deacon and Boston. Hudsons are common around here so I'm lukewarm on them. I adore Afton!! I think it's sexy and reserved.
vote up1
When you brought up your love of Grover a few years ago, I totally fell for it! I crushed on it for awhile. I still like it a lot. Hypothetically, of course. ;)
vote up1
Well first of all, I really like Sinead, Riley/Rylie for a girl and Jack. The main name for me that nobody IRL seems to like is Thatcher. I think it's unique and cute and yet could age as the boy aged into a man. I mostly just get told it reminds everyone of Margaret Thatcher.
vote up1
I like quite a few of these, actually:Imogen- I feel like this would turn heads in real life (at least in the US, where I live.) I think it's really pretty.
Harriet- I love Harriet! It's so old-fashioned and homey. Needs a comeback.
Ellen- Simple.
Virginia- I wouldn't use it but I like the look and sound of it.
Amy- So friendly and bright.Micah- So much better than Michael.
Nigel- a GP. It's just delightfully stuffy.
Silas- Going down on my list, but still nice enough.
Thaddeus- So cute! So fuzzy! So bookish!
vote up1
I really like most of these. Especially these-Keturah, Imogen, Sibyl, Elinor, Theodora, Rufus and Silas
vote up1
I love Amy. I used to be indifferent to it, but now it's one of my favorite names.
vote up1
I LOVE Imogen, and I like Theodora enough to have it on my list as well.
vote up1
Imogen was way BtN-trendy about 6-7 years ago! A lot of these seem like names most BtNers like, but maybe you mean IRL?Virginia was a name we were considering for our daughter, and it only got a good reception IRL.
vote up1
I like Harriet, Ellen and Micah.
vote up1
I like a lot of these. Silas, Imogen, and Theodora being at the top.
vote up1
I like: Imogen, Ellen, Amy, Micah, and all of those boys' names to a certain extent.
vote up1
I love Claudia. Charlotte is actually quite popular where I am.I have some pretty obscure GPs:Neith
Aoide
Andromache
Briseis
Charmian
Ceres
Gaius
Galen
Hebe
Jayne (boy)
Nephele
Prosper
Väinö
Viatrix
I think most people outside BtN would dislike my names.

I like Ceres, Viatrix, and Andromache.
vote up1
I like Galen and Prosper. I know an IRL Galen, too. I'm not sure why it isn't more common, it has a trendy kinda sound.
vote up1
I like Charmian, Nephele and Viatrix.

Sunday
DakotaTeegan or Teagan on a boy
vote up1
Sunday is alright. It's the only day of the week name that I like.
vote up1
For me too, I don't like Tuesday or any other days of the week names, but I really love Sunday. Though I've noticed most people here seem to dislike it. And irl too.
vote up1
Franca - She's not the most delicate or feminine sounding name ever but I think she's beautiful in an understated, clunky sort of way.Peony - All I read are negative phallic associations but I think of the flower, personally.Joah or Joash - There's a lot of, "No, I didn't mean Jonah or Josh, thanks. Yes, I really do like them!"
vote up1
My son's name is Joah!!! I have loved the name for many years. But I feel your pain everybody didn't like it when I told them the name.
vote up1
Peony isn't bad, I mean I would prefer it for a mn, but it's certainly not horrible. Joash is nice.
vote up1
I like Joash =) Peony isn't bad either.
vote up1
Franca is very sweet. I like it.
vote up1
IRL there are quite a few. I feel like "real" people like to hate on my style, which is what I like to call "Old lady/gentleman revival names." :) I won't list them here because most people here like them or are neutral. On BtN, most people seem to strongly dislike:Coraline
Zipporah / Tziporah
Anabel
Daphne
Ethne
Fleur
JillianCroix
Eastmund
Graham
Leopold
Allen
Roger
Blythe
Keegan
Kirby
vote up1
I like/love: Coraline
Zipporah
DaphneLeopold
Keegan
vote up1
Daphne is cute. For me it's heavily associated with the Frasier character, so I wouldn't use it. I love the character, but I can't separate the name from her.Graham is kind of nice. I know a little Graham and he's had no problems with his name.Leopold recently went onto my list. It would take some guts to use it IRL, but I love how unabashedly regal it is.Allen is a family name for me, and I like its simplicity.I knew a Keegan in high school. Cool dude.
vote up1
I like Coraline, Anabel, Fleur and Allen.
vote up1
Guess I haven't noticed any dislike of Graham here. I love it, it's one we'd use IRL!Leopold used to be pretty trendy here. Maybe people got tired of it!

I just get a lot of "Graham crackers" responses. :(
vote up1
Who doesn't like graham crackers?! :P
vote up1
I like Zipporah, Daphne, Leopold and Allen.
vote up1
I really, really like Leopold and Allen =)

I feel like most of my PNL should be here. What other people think used to be a big concern of mine but now I really don't care, I mean I like to get opinions of others but the nay-sayers won't discourage me from using a name I really like. The only opinion that would completely veto a name I love would be DH.Almira
Amelina
Branwen
Bronwen
Calypso
Carys
Elva
Elyse
Evie
Frances
Lavinia
Liviana
Nova
Orli
Seija
Tegan
Azriel
Cain
Claudio
Cyrus
Errol
Fintan
Grimm
Jethro
Keane
Killian
Loki
Odell
Odin
Oswald
Reid
Remus
Reuben
Rupert
Stanley
Thorley
Thorsten
Viggo
vote up1
I like Bronwen, to an extent.I like Elyse if spelled Elise.Evie as a nickname is adorable.Lavinia is cool. It's very Victorian revival. And reminds me of the color purple.Nova is also nice. I like the sound of it and the star association.
I like Keane. I posted a thread about it once, and most people said it was too closely tied to the band for them.Reid is handsome.
vote up1
Ah, I love your names!Almira, Branwen, Bronwen, Carys, Elva, Elyse, Lavinia, Nova, and Orli just seem kind of mystical and fairy-tale-ish to me. I love Calypso for it's mythology connotation.Azriel, Errol, Jethro, and Thorley are just fabulous. Killian is fantastic too, and so is Thorsten. I'm so happy to see Loki, Odin, and Remus! I love them, especially Loki. And Viggo is an awesome name.

Rufus and Susannah are two names that I've tried out in public that seem to get negative comments (whereas less familiar names like Tamsin and Jocelyn, at least in the US, have encouraging reactions). On BTN, probably Kitty, Letitia/Laetitia, Esme, Greer, and Isla for girls. I can't really tell for boys, but reactions to Eugene and Benedict have been mixed.

This message was edited 7/13/2014, 10:19 PM

Oh, Letitia. It's so pretty, but the "ghetto name" reputation it has around here has ruined it. It's a shame.

I like Susannah & Benedict.

I love Kitty and Susannah, and I quite like Eugene.

I love Charlotte and Liam.Zaharina is very poorly rated on my PNL. I can understand why, but I think it's so beautiful. Same for Katarzyna.Other names I love that most other people don't:
Elisheva
Eliana (BtNers tend to find it too frilly, which I can see, but I love it anyway)
Marina (too boat-y)
Adriana said ah-dree-AH-na instead of ay-dree-AH-na or ay-dree-AN-a
CameliaAnd 99% of BtN is sick to death of Sophia, Isabel, Anna, and Grace, all of which are in my top 10.
vote up1
I like Liam more than I do Charlotte, though I like both names.I don't see why anyone wouldn't like Zaharina either, it's very pretty.I like Eliana, marina and Adriana.I love Sophia, Isabel, and Grace as well, especially Grace.
vote up1
Its too bad people are sick of Sophia and Isabel as they are really lovely names, just overused recently. Some day they will be usable again.
vote up1
I also like/love Eisheva (love Elisheba even more!), Eliana, Marina, Camelia, Sophia, Isabel, Anna and Grace.

JamieJamie on a girl I have always had a soft spot for it and a lot of people IRL or on BTN don't really like it as a given name. its seriously on my top five though. another GP of mine is Jazlyn which I should rightfully catch a lot of flack about but for some reason I like it too. even though it breaks all of my "rules in theory.
vote up1
I like Jamie on a girl, too. I prefer it for a boy, but I've always had a soft spot for Jamie-on-a-girl as well.
vote up1
I like both names! Jazlyn is so cool.
vote up1
I like Jamie on a girl! I think it's very upbeat and energetic.
vote up1
I like Jamie on a girl! And Andy on a girl, too. I wouldn't use them as given names on boys though.
For me, they both sound wimpy on a boy but cool on a girl.Unfortunately, I do not like Jazlyn.

Hated IRL
Girls: Ophelia, Adelaide, Beatrice, Mary, Simone, Penelope
Can't think of any for boysHated on BtN

Boys: Liam (again, you're not alone!), Landon

Kira and Landon are nice.

I like Ophelia, Adelaide, Mary, Riley, Kira (my cousin's name is Kyra, which is pronounced the same), and Liam.
vote up1
I like Ophelia and Simone.Landon is a good name. I had no idea people didn't like it.
vote up1
I like: Beatrice (I get the same reaction from ppl IRL!), Mary, Kaylie, Riley and Landon. Adelaide, Summer and Liam are all okay in my books too.
vote up1
I love Liam. Yes, it's super popular, but it's a great name. (I also love Adelaide and Mary and like Simone, but that's not unusual for BtN.)

Sam- This is tough, because I love just Sam but don't know if I think it can stand alone. The fuller names don't appeal to me.
Dexter- Come on, Dex is a cool nickname, people.
Barnaby- So much fun!Edie- as a nickname for Edith.
Eden- kind of like it.
Rosie, but only as a nickname.
Layla
Jemima- Wouldn't use it, but like it.

I like Gemma a lot. Keziah has also grown on me lately.

I love Claudia, and am more easy on Charlotte these days. I also kinda like Riley for a girl, and I love Jack. I wish I could use Jack but it's like the #1 boys' name where I live right now.My mum also hates certain favourite names of mine: Coralie, Ezra, Tabitha, Nora, Milo (drink), Winifred (before we named our dog Winnie, now I'm sad I can never use Winnie on a kid, but w/e)I'm trying to think. Um. BtN hated names.... I don't know if there's any ones I would defend, or any names I've posted about that have had a bad reaction. Hmmm. I am loving Sophie so hard right now, does that count? I would totally name a child Sophie. One of my PNLs was at one time rateable... Lower than 2 stars were Annora, Anoushka, Asher, Charlie as a full FN (OH I also love Charlie on a girl ha), Clemence, Clement, Edie (maybe not so BtN friendly, I love Eden), Ezekiel, Ezra (I thought this was a BtN fave?), Jemima, Juniper (BtN what), Liora, Mariamne, Marlowe, Noam, Romola, Roshanara, Sasha (on both), Tapiwa, Tate (also on both), Torin, and Wynn.Speaking of Tapiwa, Malawi has gotten me to love all sorts of weird-ass names like Loveness and Wonderful and Obama and Happy and Dorica and Elida and Evaleti and Bright and Modesta and Flossie and Manis (I actually adore Manis / Maness on a girl) and Phalida.

I know you live in Australia just cos milo is a drink to us =)I like Annora, Asher (love!), Charlie, Ezekiel, Marlowe and Sasha (I do like it on my but I think a boy would be teased).

CalvinWhy don't people go for Calvin? It's not like it gets a lot of hate; it just never seems to come up. I like it! Did no one else read Calvin and Hobbes comics? :-)One of my very favorites is Boris. It is probably not a surprise that in real life I don't find it to have a lot of fans. ;-)

I love Calvin, and Cal. It's been on my top ten list for the past 4 or 5 years. We considered it when naming my son, but we ended up choosing a family name, as we did with our daughter. We do have a wonderful family member named Calvin, but he's my uncle and aunt's dog, so.. ;-)

I'm from BC and Calvin has had relatively popular usage here for a couple decades, it's no Michael or Aiden, but you can find them around.I think it's fairly handsome.
vote up1
I actually don't mind Calvin. I don't think I have ever met a Calvin before though, as it's not a popular name here in Australia. The only thing I don't like about it is the meaning, not so great.Boris is alright too, though I wouldn't use it.

Names that were snubbed by various family and friends when I proposed them for a child:boys - Francis / Frankie, Conrad, Kendrick / Kenrick, Merrick, Robin, Darwin, Rowan, Drew, Ray, Jay, Julian
girls - Lark, Medora, Melora, Meridy, Audra, Edith (husband said it "made a statement"), Isla.Charlotte and Claudia were well-received IRL and here, when I proposed them for a daughter.Names I like that I think are disliked by most on BtN: River (e), Myron, Meryl, Cheryl, Charmaine, Mia, Devon (f), Quinn (f), Brandy, Brandon, Sherry, Mildred, Kirsty, Hunter, Kai, Karissa, Kelsey (m), Raven, Soleil, Winona, Peggy, Liberty, Kendra, Dion, Crystal, Kira, Virgil, DamonNames I think are alright, that I think are mostly hated (or thought to be very

I love Robin and India! I also like: River (either), Charmaine, Brandon, Kai (my cat's name), London, Jordan, Savannah, Stephanie and Chelsea.

I rather like Audra. I'm always surprised it's not more popular, what with the trendiness of Audrey and the ever popular -a ending.Soleil is a huge guilty pleasure of mine. I love it as a middle name (Lark too). I also have a soft spot for Britt. I went to middle school with a great girl named Britt.
vote up1
Conrad just seems cool to me, probably because "rad" is right there in the name. Robin is adorable for a boy, and I like Merrick too. Rowan is one of my long-time favorites and I would absolutely use it. I also think Ray deserves a comeback- it's so cool. And Julian is also one of my favorites. For the girls, I like Lark- I'm in a bird name phase at the moment. I also have liked Edith for a very long time- my mother's reaction was not so great (she works with the elderly and must see it as a very old name.)For the rest, I like Mia, Quinn, Raven, Soleil, Kira, Damon, Savannah, kind of like Sienna and Sierra, kind of like Cynthia, and Coral. I think we have a lot of names in common- similar styles!
vote up1
I like Kendra. And I don't dislike Nevaeh. It's got a pretty sound, and I don't see what's so terrible about the fact that it was created by spelling "heaven" backwards. Though I'd never use it for that very reason, it's the same reason I'd never use Christian, and I like that name.I also like Savannah, Trevor, Brittany, Cynthia, and India. Brittany in particular I wouldn't have used because it was trendy, but that doesn't mean I don't like it.

I like Edith, River, Devon (f), Dion and Steven :)

In real life everyone hates all of my favorite names! Some of my top names:
Theodore (They Love Theo but think Theodore is crusty)
Hubert
Romulus
Amyas / Amias
Caspian
Wilfred (VERY unpopular!)
Francis (VERY unpopular)
Paris (on a boy)
Jupiter
Bela (on a boy)
Snow (boy)
Augustus
Casper (the ghost of course we have everyone saying)Hilda - This is THE MOST hated name ever. I've never met one person in real life that likes Hilda, and it seems pretty unpopular on here. Its my grandmothers name, but even she doesn't seem to like it!"girly" names on boys, I love:
Emma (probably as a nickname for Emmanuel, but I just love it on a boy)
Jade
Paris
Robin
Wren (LOVE this at the moment, so does husband)
Madison
Mackenzie (though this is semi popular here for boys)
Vivian
Jocelyn (LOVE this on a boy)
Emery
Ruby - very big GP for me. I love the idea of Ruby on a boy, maybe I could use Rubeus "Ruby". My husband actually likes it too!
Willow - One of our favorite names for a boy at the moment!
vote up1
Jocelyn for a boy is quite usual where I live, no-one blinks an eye when learning of a boy called that.Good name.I can't quite get behind Ruby for a boy, but I do like Garnet, also a nice red jewel, and a better red than most rubies, in my opinion. I don't dislike Hilda, though i likely wouldn't use it.At any rate, it's better than Hulda.I know a woman named that, though she's always called Huddie, and no wonder!
vote up1
I love Theodore...it's my 3 year old's name and has been universally well received both before he was born (when people will say anything!) and since. Seriously, everyone young and old comments about how sweet/classy/refreshing it is. Here in Canada it's a win ;-)I also really like Caspian, Wilfred, Augustus, Casper and Robin. I agree Hilda gets no love...it's one of my grandmother's names as well and I think it's cute :)

I love Theodore (people don't like it IRL? I swear it's up and coming in the US at least!), Francis, Bela, Augustus, Mackenzie, and Emery.

I love Robin on a boy! And while I now like Willow for a girl, the first time I heard it was on a boy (same with Jade) and it took a while for me to think of it as a girls' name.
vote up1
I think Robin is sweet on a boy. I do prefer it as a nickname for Robert, though, as I think I'd be hard to live with otherwise.

Gloria! I would totally use Gloria. It's SO underrated. I love the retro-ness of it, and the fact that it reminds me of morning glories and their beautiful colors, and yeah, it's just an awesome name.I went through a big Dinah phase right around when I first joined BtN. Nowadays, I tend to prefer Diana, which I think is gorgeous, but I still think Dinah is fun and quirky.

I love Demelza and Elisha. My mum actually considered naming me Demelza, but she thought it would be too weird, so decided against it.

I like Sandra and Darragh. =)

I like Charlotte, Frederick nn Freddy and Jack.Mine:Lola - one of the most hated names on BtN. Most of my real-life friends dislike it too.
Viola - one of my all time favorites, but so many people hate it with a passion.
Alisa - people prefer Alice and Alyssa
Arabella and Violetta - too frilly
Marion - outdated
Maxim and Margarita - established names in my home country, but not in the US

Alisa is beautiful! I much prefer it to Alyssa.

I kind of like Lola as a nickname. And I like Violetta too- it's frilly, but that's why it's so much fun!

I loooove Miriam (I'm a sucker for the "mir" sound in general). Maeve is also nice.

I like Edith, Miriam and I think Adlai, Tiberius and Sidney are ok :)

I really like Winston.

I love Sunshine! Sunny is a cute nn as well. I can't believe anyone would find Charlotte dowdy. It's up their with Sophia as being the epitome of a classy name. I don't really discuss names in real life, but I remember Nichelle and Manfred were at times my favorite names, and when I posted about them here not a single person liked them, which floored me. I don't recall anyone liking Tancred when I posted about it either, but I wasn't quite as surprised.

I must have missed your posts!Tancred is one of my very favorite names! I also love Manfred!

Ooh, I like Tancred. I don't think I would ever use it as a first name, but it would make an awesome middle.
vote up1
Heh, I was told it sounded like tan-crud.

I can't believe anyone would find Charlotte dowdy. GUILTY! I always dredge that word up when giving my opinion on Charlotte. I'm surprised Billina has run into a lot of people in real life who thinks it's dowdy, though, because it's quite popular. But then I suppose no matter how popular a name is, there will still be a substantial number of people who dislike it.

The people I talk to had babies quite some time ago, so maybe that's part of it. It's not fresh to them, it's old lady.

Really, why do you find it dowdy? There were tons of 18th century princesses with names like Elisabeth Charlotte or Charlotte Sophia, so I tend to associate with royalty.
vote up1
There isn't really a concrete reason. It's not because of anyone I've known with the name. I've known only two Charlottes, and one was a young woman who was in her twenties and was odd in some ways, and androgynous, but certainly not dowdy. And the other is my six-year-old-great niece, who isn't dowdy---what six-year-old is? It's just something about the sound of the name. Whenever I hear it, instantly a picture springs up in my mind of a short, plain, middle-aged woman with frizzy, mousy brown, unattractive hair, thick glasses, and orthopedic shoes. LOL. Completely subjective.

I agree with not-liking most of these names (especially Mackenzie is a real bother to me) but I love both Leigh and Sunny. Really love them. Though I do prefer Leigh spelled Lee (boy or girl) and Sunny being short for Summer... A lot of people here seem not to like Indigo on a boy.
They also didn't seem fond of my pairing of Sol Santiago. But oh well :DOther names I like that people in general seem to dislike:
Briar, Hero (girl) and Skylar. I really, really like Skylar nn Sky but I know so many people hate it and think it's tacky and things.
I also have a guilty pleasure in Star for a girl. I would never use that one though.

I like Indigo for a boy. With the nickname Indie.

Yay

I missed your post about Sol Santiago. I like it.Still don't like Indigo, though.I like Skylar nn Sky ... for a girl, did you mean? lol. I hope.
I like Star, too. I think it's nice. I don't see why it should be a guilty pleasure, if stuff like Sky and River aren't. I don't like Starr, though.
vote up1
Yep, Skylar nn Sky for a girl :)I'm not sure why Star should be a guilty pleasure when Sky and River aren't... I guess because people generally seem to have a lot against Star? But that doesn't usually bother me.
Maybe I will make a thread for Star and ask. I don't like Starr either, though as a surname I wouldn't argue with the double R.Very happy you like Sol Santiago ^_^

Re: Madison. Sacrilege! But I love Claudia.I'm sort of surprised you've gotten negative feedback about Kirstin and Charlotte IRL.The two I like that few or nobody here does: Amber. I know. It was too popular. It sounds like a bimbo-cheerleader. All you can picture is a girl with 80s hair. I love it. I never would have used it because of its popularity, but, unlike some names that were or are popular, I can see why it was popular.Spelling variation I like that nobody here did: Somer instead of Summer. I do like Summer, but something about Somer makes me prefer it to Summer. And I, like everyone else, usually dislike creative spellings, and I've ranted about surnames on girls. But something about Somer---it makes me think of a nineteenth century Southern belle who was given a family surname, and I like it. But when I once posted about it, nobody else---literally not one person, as I recall---did.

I actually like Amber too! We have friends who plan to call their DD Amber Jane, should they have a little girl one day. Summer is also lovely, but not so keen on Somer as it looks like a surname to me.

I like a lot of names that people around me would find weird, or even made up. Such are Kieran. My parents are the kind of people who thinks everyone should name their kids Anna or Alexander, everything else is just a scream for attention, lol.I do like a couple of names that BtN doesn't like though. I keep telling myself it is because they are foreign to most people here, and people can't pronounce them correctly, like Lykke, Ebba, Amadeus. From your I like Madison, love Mackenzie, Liam and Jack. If I had twin sons today I could easily name them either Liam and Jack, or William and Jackson nn Liam and Jack and be perfectly happy with it. I like some trendy names too, like Kaden (only this spelling), Grayson, Kyra, Lark, Penelope, Jackson, Rylan, Kyler etc.

I really like Kieran. I'm surprised it's gotten a negative reception IRL -- it seems so on-trend.

I like Amadeus.

I love Amadeus!

I like Caden, but not Kaden. I like Kira, but not Kyra.Amadeus is cool.

I like Claudia, Frederick nn Freddy, and Leigh to a certain extent. People don't seem to like Sally (as a nn for Sarah or on its own), Polly (as a nn for Mary or on its own), and a lot of people seem to think my love for Annie is plain weird. As for boys' names, well I don't think about them as much or have as many favorites, but I remember mentioning Alden (a name I really do like) here and people thinking it was a) trendy/contrived/too like Aidan or b) old mannish
vote up1
Sally, Polly and Annie are all nice imo. I especially like Annie out of the three actually, a very cute name for a little girl, but sounds strong on a woman.
vote up1
I like Annie, and I think Alden is ok. I prefer the similar Alton though.
vote up1
I really like the name Polly as a nickname for Mary. :)
vote up1
I didn't like Sally at all until my niece was born. Now, I love it.I like Polly on its own, without Mary. I don't think most people these days would make the link, so we might as well just use Polly, IMO. I don't think your love for Annie is weird, but it isn't one of my favorite names. It's okay.I knew an Alden in high school, and he acted like an old man, so I agree that it's old mannish. Sorry.

I like Madison too, but I don't care for the nickname Maddie. I wouldn't use it on a real life baby, but I would gladly use it on a pet.

No one I know in likes Sybil, one of my favorite names! Many on here have liked it over the years. I am hoping Downton Abby will soften some of my family to it.I think I only had one BtN user like the name I chose for my daughter, Jovianne. It is different, but we love it! Most people I run into seem to like it.
vote up1
How do you pronounce it? Is it JOVY-anne?I like Sibyl. I think for people of a certain generation it screams MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES, but that whole story turned out to be BS, and I think it stands alone as a good, strong name. It's not wimpy or victim-y to me, it's take-charge. I like that.
vote up1
Yes, JO-vi-anne.
