Linus?
So as you may remember, my husband likes either really basic names (Adam, Sarah) or Arabic, etc. type names (Azriel, Sitara, Idris). He is Moslem (half Pakistani). I like old-fashioned clunky and/or old-fashioned upper-crust Enlgish kind of names primarily with some other styles thrown in. I am a non-religious person of Western European descent. He vetoes pretty much every name I really love, and I do the same.So imagine my surprise when Linus came back on my radar last week, and I happened to mention that fact, and a few days later, he said, "What about Linus Edmund John?" (Edmund John is the non-negotiable middle names set.) I feel I should be ecstatic that he feels he could see us using Linus, but I'm just not crazy about it with Edmund John. I think it's how the the "s" slides into the "E": line-uh SED-mund John. I prefer Nathaniel Edmund John, which had been our compromise when we had our first, but we went with something else entirely. TL;DR Husband said he'd be amenable to Linus Edmund John. Thoughts on the first name and combination? Preference between that and Nathaniel Edmund John? Any other ideas to go with Edmund John? Not pregnant, or even TTC, at present, but big brother to hypothetical child would be Adam Robert Donovan Sh---.-----------------------------------------

I think Linus sounds like a sneeze. Also, it rhymes and looks just like sinus... so, I’m not a fan.I love Nathaniel! Definitely gets my vote. It also sounds very nice with Adam.
Adam and Linus sounds like... a comic.
Adam and Nathaniel sounds very handsome and classic.

I honestly think you've got a winner! The elision really doesn't matter, because the whole name string is so seldom spoken out loud, and the combo is stylish. As long as you can resist naming a daughter Lucy, all will be well. That said, my ancestry and naming preferences are pretty much yours, and I've always liked Idris, and also Imran. Based on Pakistani cricket, mostly, though Idris can also be Welsh, of course.

Personally I prefer Nathaniel to Linus, but I don't think Linus Edmund John sounds bad at all. Remember that middle names are not usually said, they are rarely even read so I don't think it's an issue at all. If you're not currently planning, I might drop the conversation right now and bring it back up later with an emphasis on Nathaniel. If he's not changed his mind, then he's not changed his mind

Linus isn’t a real favorite of mine. It reminds me of the word “sinus”. I like Nathaniel Edmund John, though.

Linus is a fantastic name and it’s nice that he’s stepping outside his comfort zone. For what it’s worth, I don’t think the S from Linus slides into the middle name and more than the L from Nathaniel. However, if it’s not setting your world on fire even if it’s technically your style, then it’s not the name.
