If I were to have kids tomorrow...
...I think I would name a boy Emerson Andrew and I would name a girl Matilda Nashville. What would you name a boy or girl if you were suddenly in charge of naming one tomorrow? And if you'll humor me... I have some questions/thoughts on my combos below: First of all, what do you think of Nashville as a middle name? It's a city that changed everything for me personally (and musically), and a place where I have found a lot of happiness so part of me doesn't even care that it's different and wants to use it anyway. Follow up question...would it be weird to give a child that middle name if I were to raise her in that city? Not that I'm planning on having kids any time soon, but just a thought. Like I know Brooklyn is a popular name now, but how many kids named Brooklyn are actually growing up in Brooklyn? Second of all...my last name is Mustard. I love the sound/flow of Emerson Mustard and Matilda Mustard. I don't know if Matilda Mustard is TOO matchy, but I love the way it sounds. I also love the M and S sounds in Emerson Mustard together. Third of all....do you think Matilda Nashville Mustard is setting up a child for a really hard life? I love all three names individually, but maybe it's too much for one kid to deal with? Or is it not that bad? I know they always caution against two names that are nouns and Nashville Mustard just sounds like a country-branded condiment, haha. And...Emerson is one of my favorite writers (as in Ralph Waldo). Check out Self Reliance if you get a chance. Because I like the writer and the flow with Mustard, it's my first choice. Matilda was one of my favorite books as a kid and again, I love the way it sounds with the last name. My partner's name is Andrew so I like Andrew as a middle name and I think it flows well. I also think if you're going to give a kid the initials M.M, the middle name should be something starting with an N so it can be M.N.M (like M&M). I was always disappointed as a kid that my initials didn't spell anything or sound cool. And that was before all the online lingo. I figure, life is short and if you can work in L.O.L, I.D.K, J.K,, M.N.M, etc., why not do it? But that's me. Maybe other people take initials more seriously. Anyway, I haven't been on this board in a while, but wanted to share some new favorite ideas and get a read on the more ridiculous aspects of this choice. Thanks for reading!

My name picks-my top 2 choices at the momentBoy- Brandon Robin or Robin Jermaine
Girl- Zara Nichelle or Johari AnastasiaNashville would probably sound better a for a boy. No,it's not weird to use any city for a middle name as long as it sounds good to you.

I'm big on honouring names and not just for family members but for places, feelings and virtues too. Even colours. That's why Devon and Phoenix are on my boys list, for me they are symbolic.
I'm also big on alliteration, my full name being Millie Mary Mc___ so Matilda Mustard sounds nice to my ears.
I've always liked Matilda, especially with the nickname Mattie, I dislike Tillie a lot. Emerson is my style but has never graced my long list, I think it's okay, I like it as a unisex name. Andrew is a name in my family so I like it as far as an honouring name goes.
If I were naming a real life baby tomorrow...
A boy would probably be Jack. With maybe 1 family honouring middle and 1 virtue.
Something like Jack Herbert Bravery or Jack Phoenix Keith.A girl is harder, there isn't a stand-out name on my list that I'm as sure as right now as I am as sure with Jack. I'm torn between Brooke, Natasha and Alexandria. Right now, Brooke is winning out. The middle names have been a certainty for years as they honour important people.
Brooke Mary Eleanore.

If I had a kid tomorrow, I’d name them Ezra Julian or Beatrice MabelI’ll answer your other questions when I’m on my laptop.

IRL I'd have to hold a baby before I could name them, but...Astrid Leopoldine
Horatio Dara "Ray"
do you think Matilda Nashville Mustard is setting up a child for a really hard life? No, Matilda is an ordinary enough name, and IMO anything goes as a MN. I think Mustard is going to standout no matter what it's paired with. Emerson Andrew is okay.

Ooh, I love the combination Astrid Leopoldine and I like Ray as a nickname for Horatio! Thanks so much for your thoughts on Matilda and Emerson,

As for Nashville...not a personal favorite but I've heard worse. I like Matilda. Not a big fan of Emerson or Andrew.

Hey, thanks so much for your time responding. The general feel of the responses seems to be that Nashville and Mustard in the same name is a little much so I won't be using them together. Thanks for your thoughts on Matilda and Emerson. Personally, more than three names with a last name feels like a lot, but every family is different. I like Minea and Camilla. I also like Leonora with the nn Leo or Lea. I love August as a name and Maximillian.

Susannah Laurel and Jack Edwin, I think. Laurel, Jack, and Edwin are all family names. I'm unsure of whether I'd use Jack or John nn Jack. I like Matilda, but I don't care for Nashville. I think the -ville ending makes it not so namey. Matilda Mustard is cute, but it also sounds like a character in a children's book. I think I'd choose something a little more staid with that last name. I'm not a fan of Emerson, the name or the transcendentalist. I guess I like it fractionally more on a boy. Andrew is fine. I don't like or dislike it. It was very common among boys I grew up with.

Hey, thanks so much for responding. The consensus seems to be that Nashville with the last name Mustard is too much, so I'll take it off the table. Though I originally thought it was close enough to name like Melville (as in Herman Melville) to work as a given name. But I know it's uncommon. Andrew would be an honoring name, it was never a name I loved until I met my partner, lol. Thanks for your thoughts on Emerson and Matilda! I appreciate it! I love Susannah Laurel and Jack Edwin. Both flow well and are interesting and different without being weird. I personally like Jack Edwin better than John Edwin and it's one less step to have John on all his official paperwork and documents and then go by Jack everywhere else, in my opinion.

I think that Emerson and Matilda are both really good, classic names, that still feel modern :) I think that the last name Mustard is just overall a little hard in elementary school, but no one will care once they're in adults. I just remember in 2nd grade how kids like latched onto how funny(?) it was that a kid was named Hunter Fisher. Or how some kids thought it was funny to just call someone ketchup without any context. Kids are weird. It really just depends on how the teacher handles classroom respect, etc. Although, I have seen parents give kids pun names that just... were bad. Like puns they couldn't even grow out of. And hmm if I was in charge of naming someone tomorrow... some ideasSimone Jude
Agatha Evonne

Hey,
Thanks so much for taking time to respond! That's a good point about kids teasing anyone for any name in grade school. Definitely occurred in my day too. Yeah, I was just going for alliteration, while trying not to scar anyone for life too badly, lol. But I'm glad you like Emerson and Matilda. I like them too! I love SImone Jude and Ezra Jules. Micah Ronan is great too! Agatha Evonne has a nice flow as well.

I think Nashville is a bit much, especially for a girl and especially with Matilda and Mustard. It’s defintely more masculine to me. I have a cousin named Nash, male , so I can’t quite make it work for a female, myself.I don’t think Matilda Nashville Mustard is setting her up for a hard life, per say, but it sounds more like a comic to me, that might run with Blondie. “Here’s my new best friend, Matilda Mustard!” Emerson sounds really nice with Mustard. If I was naming a baby tomorrow, it would either be between:
Gabrielle Vivienne
Gabrielle HopeOrGraham Phillip
Grant Phillip
Or maybe Gideon Jace

Yeah, that seems to be the general consensus that Nashville is a little too much with the last name Mustard. I figure it's 2019, so why not have a more masculine name on a girl if you really like it. But I know Nashville Mustard probably won't work well. Thanks for your thoughts on Matilda Mustard. I like Gabrielle Vivienne and Craham Phillip. To me, Jace is such a trendy name and so many little kids have it that I'm turned off.

Mine would be, at any point of time...
Lucy Emiliana Faye for a girl. (Both middle names honoring. One of which after my late mother) & Cole Jeremiah Q1: I honestly don't care for Nashville. I think it's really pretenious. (I especially think it's worse for a girl). 'Matilda Nashville' doesn't have the best flow. I can't seem to ignore the fact that they both contain an 'i' sound.Q2: I don't mind Matilda or Emerson but they do sound strange with that given surname, Matilda Mustard especially. And as another user pointed out, it does sound like a character from clue. I like Andrew as well but don't care for the flow of 'Emerson Andrew' but it's doableQ3: I pretty much do, yeah. Sorry. I'd honestly reconsider the middle AND the surname if I was in your position. (Perhaps use the father's lastname instead)
vote up1
Yeah, based on the comments here, having Nashville and Mustard in the same name seems to be a little too much, although I actually liked that Matilda and Nashville both contained the i sound since it adds assonance, but to each their own. My first name has nothing similar sounding to Mustard, and I still get Colonel Mustard jokes. I figure it's gonna happen anyway with the last name, might as well have a first name that has some nice alliteration with it. But to each their own again. My partner's last name is more normal and I'd consider using his, but I specifically like Emerson and Matilda because of how they sound with the last name Mustard. I will pick a different middle name though. If/When the time comes and I'm naming a real kid, I'd definitely talk with him about last name options. I'd be proud to pass on Mustard though so I'd still consider it. I love Lucy Emiliana Faye as a name and Cole has always been one of my favorites!

Nashville seems more masculine to me-- a lot of people already use Nash for a boy. Statistically, there are less girls named Brooklyn in New York than there are elsewhere in the country, so in general people avoid naming children after where they live. I also agree with the other comments saying Nashville Mustard sounds like a brand. I also don't love Matilda Mustard but you can only do so much about your surname.I like Emerson on a boy. Andrew is meh to me but its honoring.I would not go out of my way to give cool initials; I'd just want to avoid spelling out anything negative. Choosing an N name just because the initials are MM is silly to me.
DH and I do have a boy and girl name picked out if we were to "suddenly" be in charge of naming a baby [since we will be in charge of naming a baby in ~10 weeks]. But you'll just have to wait for those; I'm not seeking input on them. ;)If I were naming another baby:Fable Neptunine Vesper Floyd Walden Mordecai
vote up1
I love Walden in a name and the combo of Walden Mordecai is great! Neptune could be a fun middle name too, though I've never heard of Neptunine. Fable is cool name too. Yeah, I'm getting the general response that Nashville Mustard in the same name is a bit much, so I probably won't use them both in one name. Maybe Nash, even though it's a common boy's name (and dog's name) in Nashville. But I figure it's 2019, so why not? But Nashville Mustard is probably off the table in my combos from now on. Will keep Nash in my head though. I'll keep playing with it. Thanks for your thoughts on Emerson and Matilda too! I guess I just figure if I already have MM as the initials and no strong ideas for a middle name, why not go for a letter that will add a bit of fun and interest to the initials? But definitely shouldn't be the deciding factor, I agree. Thanks for your thoughts!

agree about Nashville ...And that combo just cries out for a brother named Johnny Knoxville.

You hit it on the head with the country-branded condiment! lol Nashville is more masculine to me, anyway. I think it's the Nash part.
vote up1
Hey, thanks! The general responses in the comments show that Nashville Mustard in one name is a little much anyway. I do like the name Nash and that's an option too. I know it's more masculine, but it's 2019 so why not? Lol. But I'll keep playing with it. Thanks!

The girl would be named Lily for sure. It has been my favorite name since forever and I love the meaning and everything about it. It is really important to me. If my partner wouldn't like it it would be hard for me :P I think I could compromise on Lilia and call her Lily because I like that too.As for the middle name I think I would let my partner choose that one and if he came from another country (which is very likely because I live in an international environment) I would like it to be something to reflect his culture. I like Lily Mihrimah at the moment because I am reading about the Ottoman empire ;)As for the boy, I have no idea :O I usually like only very few boys names and never enough to actually use. At the moment I kind of like Jonah, Gabriel and Carlo. But really I have no idea.Nashville - I don't like it but if you do you should go for it! If you were to raise her in the city it would still be fine. It is just a middle name. Almost anything goes, in my opinion. If it has meaning to you that is great.
about the surname - I usually like it when first and surname begin with the same letter, but when the surname is also a word it can sometimes sound comical. So Matilda Mustard isn't my favorite combo. But if you love Matilda that shouldn't matter. As for Matilda Nashville Mustard...yeah, it is a bit funny. I mean if it is really very important to you I think it is still usable. But maybe there is another way to honor the city? I don't know so much about Nashville but maybe there is a certain flower or tree symbolic to it or the name or a river or part of the city would make a good name?
initials - I would want to avoid something like M.N.M, I mean I don't think it's an advantage. But also not a disadvantage it just wouldn't bother me much but I don't see it as something great ;)
vote up1
Hey, thanks for taking the time to respond! Lily is a great name! It's one I've always liked. And to use it as a nickname would be a nice compromise too, if needed. I love the name Carlo! Yeah, the general feel of the comments seems to be that having Nashville and Mustard in one name is a little too much. The river than runs through Nashville is the Cumberland, which I couldn't really see as a middle name. Plus it's a pretty dirty river lol. But I'll keep playing with it and see what I can find. Maybe Nash or something. Good point on the initials. I had a friend in high school named Meg and her initials were MEG and I always thought that was cool and always wanted my initials to spell something, but they didn't. I guess I figure if I have 2/3 initials to mean something, why not do it? I like that point of it not being an advantage or a disadvantage. I'll keep playing with that too! Thanks so much!

I think that Nashville could potentially be a fun and quirky middle name, but with the LN of Mustard, it sounds like a brand. I think the rest would depend on her personality. I went to high school with a boy named Hei Dong. Luckily for him, he had a great sense of humour and an outgoing personality, so kids were laughing with him and not at him. I feel like a shrinking violet, however, would not fare as well. SO and I have mostly agreed on names, but middle names for the girl are still under construction.Theodore Bronius Mark & Genevieve Florence Margot We're also considering Genevieve Florence Cosima, Genevieve Florence Irene, Genevieve Florence Eleni, and Genevieve Florence Valerie.

I love Genevieve Florence Margot!
I think you have a winner

Thank you for the feedback and taking time to read it! I agreed, Nashville could be a cool/quirky middle name but maybe too much with the last name Mustard. Depends on the kid for sure. I love the story about Hei Dong. It's great that he had such a good sense of humor, but maybe not everyone could pull that off. Thanks!! I love the name Theodore and Bronius Mark is a cool middle name combo! I think Genevieve Florence Margot is my favorite combo out of the ones you listed. It flows well and Margot has always been one of my favorite names.

Alban Nicholas & Mariel Anne I think the MN Nashville would be more meaningful if the child were raised in the city. I always love names that have personal connections. Both FNs sound cool with Mustard! ...however, I do think Nashville Mustard is a bit much...
vote up1
No worries! "A bit much" seems to be the consensus in the replies, lol. I don't think I used both on the same name. Maybe Nash, but I still have time to play with it. I do love the alliteration of Matilda Mustard and Emerson Mustard though. But perhaps I can find another meaningful middle name. I love the name Mariel and it goes nicely with Anne. Alban Nicholas sounds good too. Both unique names, but not too out there!

Emerson Andrew and Matilda Nashville are cute.Sure, Nashville is a little unconventional as a name, but I love that it has a special meaning to you. Also, you have some more leniency inn the mn spot IMO. I feel similarly about Charleston, and I would definitely use that as a mn. Mustard is a cool last name! Matilda Mustard is a little character-y, but not too bad. Would future kids definitely have your last name instead of your partner's? As for setting Matilda Nashville Mustard up for a hard life, I don't think that should be a huge concern. Some people might think it's silly. Unfortunately, kids can be jerks. Someone can have a super common name like Matthew and become "Fatty Matty" or something completely unrelated to his name, like "Four Eyes".I appreciate a good set of initials too. My initials are CAM, and I've gone by Cam/Cammie my whole life because of it. It's always a good dinner party conversation starter if nothing else!ETA what I would name kids tomorrow: Juliet Arrington (family name) or Arrington John (I'm currently pregnant, and these are the names we'll be going with depending on the sex).

Thank you so much for your response, CAM. I love that you got a whole nick name out of your initials! I always liked the idea of creating the initials SAM with the last name Mustard and using Sam as another nickname. I'll keep that in mind for sure. Sawyer has always been a favorite. Maybe Sawyer Althea Mustard (top of my head now). Sawyer Mustard too weird? I kinda love it.Emerson and Sawyer sound a little preppy, but I don't really mind. Anyway, I'll keep playing with it. Charleston would be a great middle name! The last name could go either way. I love the name Mustard so I wouldn't mind passing it on, but using my partner's name (one syllable starting with L and fairly normal) might be easier too. I honestly probably wouldn't use Matilda without Mustard cause I love the alliteration so much, but I love the name Luna with my partner's last name. Emerson too goes better with Mustard, but could work with his name. I also love the name Walter (as in Walt Whitman) and that might match his last name better. I feel like Walter Mustard is hard to say with the Ts and ending ar/er sounds. And Walt Mustard sounds a little more cartoony, in my mind, but maybe not. Infinite possibilities, I suppose. Emerson and Matilda could become Walter and Luna I guess. I like Whitman as a name too, but don't love that it means "white man" lol. But Walt or little Wally could be cute too. Lots to consider for sure! I love the name Juliet and it flows well with Arrington. Arrington is cool for a boy too. Fun to say and not super popular. Congratulations on the new little one!

Irene Beatriz (though Ophelia and Estella Irene are nice too, just thinking about Irene) and Alasdair Robert.

Oooh, I LOVE Estella Irene. That's a beautiful combo. I also love Beatriz as a middle name, with the z! Alasdair Robert is a handsome combo as well!

I would use Katherine"Kate" Marie for a girl and Liam Daniel for a boy. Matilda Mustard is a nice combo, but I personally see Nashville as more of a boy's name. I had an acquaintance name her daughter Brooklyn, and she lived in the Midwest! Emerson and Matilda Mustard sounds like a great sibset!
vote up1
Hey Emma, thank you so much for taking the time to respond! Good point about Nashville being more of a boy's name. Nash is actually a pretty popular name here for boys (and dogs lol) in Nashville so I get more of a boy feel too from it, but I figure it's 2019, why not. However, based on replies in this thread, having Nashville Mustard in the same name seems like a little much so I probably wouldn't use Nashville with my last name. Maybe Nash, but it doesn't flow quite as well with Matilda. I also like Noelle/Noel. I'll keep thinking. That's funny about a Brooklyn in the Midwest! I like Emerson and Matilda together too in a sibset! Thanks! I love the name Emma and I think Emma Katherine goes together well, but Katherine Marie is very nice and Kate is a classic. I work with kids and we have SO MANY Liams running around so I'm kind of turned off from it, but it is a nice name and I see why it's popular. Daniel is classic and I love the nick name Danny too! Daniel Liam and Liam Daniel both sound very handsome together. I do think Liam and Kate make a nice sibset!

Mustard is definitely a unqiue surname! Noel/Noelle is a nice classic name, especially for a Christmas baby.

Hmmmmm… I'd probably go with Alexander Julius (although it is quite the name to live up to) and Maya Lily.As a middle name, I don't like Nashville. I tend to not be a fan of city names (with some exceptions). I also think that if you were to raise her in Nashville it would be a bit weird, but it's a middle name and unless you would be calling her by both names most people wouldn't even know about it.Matilda Mustard sounds like a character from Clue. Maybe Colonel Mustard's niece or something. I think that she might get teased as a child (but honestly, I think any kid with the last name Mustard will get teased a little at some point), but the name does have a catchy factor that she might embrace when older.
Emerson Mustard sounds fine.
vote up1
Hey, thanks so much for taking the time to respond! I love Alexander Julius - why not give him a little inspiration off the bat? And Maya Lily is beautiful too! I've always liked both of those names! Good point about not many people probably even knowing about her middle name. I definitely wouldn't call her by both. Yeah, I get Colonel Mustard jokes all the time and my first name doesn't have any alliteration or matchyness with Mustard, so it'll happen anyway, I figure. Might as well have a name that has a little catchy factor and is fun to say. She could always go by Tilly or Tilda if she hates the alliteration too. Very good point though, I appreciate it! I like Emerson Mustard too.

I like your reason for using Nashville. It's easier to get away with as a middle name, and I don't think it's a problem if you live in Nashville. On the other hand, I tend to perceive place names as tacky for some reason - it might just be me. And I do think that - even though it's just a middle name - the combination with your last name does make it a little bit too much like a brand name. Shortening it to Nash might help to a certain extent. Or the internet tells me that Nashville was named after a fellow named Francis Nash. Would Matilda Frances Mustard be too obscure an homage to your city?As far as the first name Matilda goes, I tend to like alliterative names, so I support it. I'm not a fan of the name Matilda itself, but most people seem to like it, and "Waltzing Matilda" is a fun song. Just be aware that alliteration in names does annoy a minority of people. Also, with the surname Mustard, it does sound a bit like a Harry Potter or Roald Dahl character. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but it definitely grabs attention way more than Andrew Mustard.Normally I would suggest using Waldo instead of Emerson. However, with a surname like Mustard you have to be careful not to use a first name that's too comical or eccentric. The only drawback to Emerson is that, again, Emerson Mustard sounds like a brand.I wouldn't mind having MNM as initials, but the other initials you mentioned don't seem very dignified. I wouldn't be thrilled if my initials were shorthand for "I don't know" or "Just kidding." I'd prefer something like POW or JOY - or, ending with an M, maybe BAM.
vote up1
Hey, thanks so much for taking the time to respond. All good points! I personally don't mind place names, but it depends on the place, I suppose. Nash is a good idea, and it's actually a pretty common boy's name in Nashville. Also, thank you so much for taking the time to look up the history of Nashville! I did know about Francis Nash, but Francis/Frances have never been favorites for me. But Nash is another good option. I know Reese Witherspoon named her son Tennessee, which I also kinda love for a middle name, probably not with the name Mustard. The general opinion among responses seems to be the two together (Nashville Mustard) is too much, and I agree. I personally love alliterative names too. I had always wished mine was alliterative, but I know that could annoy people. I don't mind a cartoonish feel as long as it's not something totally ridiculous. Matilda Mustard with a more typical middle name would be fun to say, I think. I didn't think of Emerson Mustard as a brand until you said it. I guess it could be, but my love of Ralph Waldo might surpass it. Again, not expecting a kid any time soon so I have time to think on it. That is a good point about initials like IDK or JK not being dignified (Although maybe JK Rowling might disagree, haha!) , but that's a good idea to make sure if the letters stand for something else, it has a positive Association. LOL to me feels positive, as does JOY. MNM seems more neutral to me, but I would prolly avoid IDK or OMG or something lol. BAM isn't bad either lol. I wouldn't go out of my way to pick a name solely based on initials, but if I already had 2/3 initials set up with names that were important to me, I might go for the third. But lots of time to play and consider. Thanks so much!
vote up1
First of all, what do you think of Nashville as a middle name?I personally find it unappealing. I get you have a lot of respect for its place in your life, but why do you have to give a child the name? It doesn't have significance for their life and thus reeks a bit of ego. We are to choose names that we feel will help our child, not that will make us feel good. I think if its only a middle name then I'm not as bothered but still...
Do you think Matilda Nashville Mustard is setting up a child for a really hard life? They sound like cartoon characters, which I don't find appealing. Anytime you put the same initials together they have that sound. Add in the fact that its an actual word and that makes it even more cartoony. I figure, life is short and if you can work in L.O.L, I.D.K, J.K,, M.N.M, etc., why not do it? Because our kids aren't where we should make a joke. I know you think its cutesy or cool, but what if they don't feel that way?
vote up1
Hey, thanks for your feedback. I appreciate you taking time to read and respond. Don't most people choose names that have personal significance for them? Is it ego to name a child after your parent, or is that honoring? I figure a place name is similar to that concept. What about naming a child after your favorite author? I didn't think it was far fetched to pick a name based on personal significance, but I get Nashville is different and not for everyone. My parents said they picked my first name cause it was the only name that they could agree on, and I always thought that was kind of lame and wished my name had more personal significance and meaning. But that's just me. Fair point on the cartoon characters, and Nashville Mustard might be a little much for one band I think if I did use Matilda Mustard, I'd pick a more typical middle name based on the responses in this thread. As for initials, I wouldn't go out of my way to give a child initials that meant or spelled something, but if I already had 2/3 letters that spelled something with names that were significant to me,, I might try to go for the third. Maybe not IDK or OMG, but something like LOL or JOY or MNM that's more positive. I knew a girl named Meg who had the initials MEG and I thought that was really cool. Again, as a kid, I always wished my initials spelled something, but maybe that's just me. And fair point that maybe my kid wouldn't feel the same way and that's something to consider. I don't mean it as s joke, just something cool/positive to add to a child's name. Thanks for your thoughts!

Nashville is unfortunate, but otherwise I like your picks. Some place names just don’t work as people names, no matter how much you want them to.If I had to name a kid tomorrow, they would be either Avielle Wren or Sylviane WrenSylvie
Franklin FelixFrankie” or August FelixGus

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I feel like Nashville is similar enough to a name like Melville (as in Herman Melville), but I agree that it's unusual and may not be everyone's favorite. And it probably doesn't work with the last name Mustard anyway. I love the name Sylvia and Sylviane is a cool twist on it. I love alliteration of Franklin Felix and I've always liked the name August though I'd prolly use "Augie", but that's me. Thanks for taking the time to read and post!
