[Opinions] Middle name(s) for Sylvia + pronunciation

Sylvia has grown on me and if I ever have children, I would consider to use it. The problem is that I haven't found a suitable middle name that goes with Sylvia. In fact, it's easier to form combos where Sylvia itself is a middle name but not vice versa!So, what would you match with Sylvia? I like classic, international names (e.g. Anna, Maria, Helena), but also some quirkier ones (e.g. Cosima, Kerensa, Synnöve). But I'm open to any ideas, so you can just put your own personal favorites. You can also suggest two middle names instead of one, if it's more your style.Also, an extra question: what do you think of Sylvia's Finnish pronunciation (SUYL-vee-ah)? The only difference compared to the English pronunciation is the letter "y", which is pronounced the same way as the German "ü" or the French "u". I would use this pronunciation, so I'd like to know if it sounds to you nicely exotic or just utterly horrible.

One, I think the Finnish pronunciation sounds good, unusual to my ears but not in a bad way.Two, suggestions:

Yay, so glad you liked Sylvia Margot. Sylvia Christabel is my little tribute to the Pankhurst (suffragette) family. Sylvia Emmeline and Sylvia Adela also come to mind. But yes, Christabel isn't everyone's cup of tea. Oh. One last thought. I read in your responses that Sylvie is not for you. But I wanted to offer Sylvie Linnea anyway. You never know . . . . :0)

Sylvia Adela is a very nice combo! But again, Emmeline is not my style: I guess it's too frilly for my taste just like Christabel.I'd change Sylvie Linnea to Sylvi Linnea: it flows and sounds a bit better to me (with Sylvi pronounced in the Finnish way). I think Linnea is pretty, but unfortunately I've get fed up with it because of its current popularity here in Finland :(

Thanks for all the feedback. Sometimes I wonder if things I write are ever read. So glad you like Sylvia Adela. And Sylvi Linnea is wonderful. Thanks for putting me on to Sylvi. I love finding new (to me) variants of personal favorites. It's what interests me about languages generally: the way one word / name changes slightly from language to language. So interesting. And now, I want to travel to Finland! I was in Helsinki for one night in 1982. I wish it had been longer.

Sylvia XantheAs far as pronunciation, you should go with whatever is most common in your area. The Finnish pronunciation is fine, but you should expect different pronunciations in different in different countries.

I much prefer the English pronunciation. And a Sylvia living in a primarily English speaking country would have difficulty getting people to pronounce it the Finnish way.Sylvia Diane

Sylvia Agnes - if pronounced as AHNG-nes; by the way, I love the Italian version of Agnes, that is Agnese :)I love Clara, but Sylvia Clara doesn't flow well: Clara Sylvia or Sylvia Claire would be better in my opinion.

If you have a hard time finding middle names for Sylvia, have you tried Sylvie? Its nice as well but pairs with more middle names since a lot of female names end with an -a and make it hard not to have rhyming names.

I agree, Sylvie is easier to use as a first name than Sylvia. Sylvie is very sweet (like its Finnish variant Sylvi), but I still prefer Sylvia: I guess Sylvie and Sylvi are too youthful for my taste?

To me Sylvie/Sylvi is more ambiguous. I wouldn't be sure if it's a boy or a girl since there is the male name Sylve. I don't know if it's used in Finland though.

In the US its definitely feminine, though we do have some male Sylvios here, though they all seem to be older and immigrants.

I had to check from the site of Finland's Population Register Centre, if Sylve is ever used in Finland (because I've never come across with it). The result: Sylve has been given to less than 10 women and 10 men in years 1900-1939. Sylvi, on the other hand, is clearly a feminine name here: it's given to 15360 women since the late 1800's and only less than 15 men.
