Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie? Hmm, I am named after a book/tv/real-life person and I never liked it much..I always felt like I would have rather had a more personally meaningful namesake.4. 1. What names are you thinking of most today?
Xanthe, Opal, Adelaide, Sonnet
Levi and August (Levi has been on my mind alot this week)
2. Do you think its ok to have themed middle names in a sibset if you like all the names?
the thing I don't like about themes is being tied to it, and using a name you don't love just to fit the theme. I'd hate to be restricted like that. However, if I loved all the names then I'd consider it, and in the middle name spot it's realy not a big deal, especially fi you don't carry it on for all the kids. It's not as noticeable as in the fn spot.
3. Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie?
yeah, if it has meaning to you I say go for it, I plan on using Lucy for a couple of reasons, one of them being after Lucy in Chronicals of Narnia. 4. Do you think in about 8 years time it'll be ok to call a boy Shiloh?
I think it's fine to use on a boy now5. How do you find most of the names you put on your list, or have you just come across them over the years?
Some of them I come across and love instantly, others I warm up to over time. Some are names I meet in real life, others are ones I've come across here6. How long have you had a name list?
Probably around 5 years. When I started my first list, my top names were Bailey and Bennett7. Do you write fiction/film scripts etc?

1. What names are you thinking of most today?
Milo and Cecily 2. Do you think its ok to have themed middle names in a sibset if you like all the names?
Sure. I would ever do it unless the theme was very subtle though. It's a bit tacky. 3. Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie?
Absolutely. Naming your child after something you hold to be very special is always a plus. 4. Do you think in about 8 years time it'll be ok to call a boy Shiloh?
To me Shiloh is a boys name. Not to mention it's one of my favorite names for a boy. On a girl it looks and is absolutely ridiculous. 5. How do you find most of the names you put on your list, or have you just come across them over the years?
I've just come across them over the years, mostly on this website. 6. How long have you had a name list?
As long as I can remember. 7. Do you write fiction/film scripts etc?
No8. Whats your least favorite name atm?
Carly 9. Whats the first combo that comes into your head right now? Quick!!!
Cecilia Violet 10. Do you think pets should have pet names (e.g. Fluffy) or people names or do you not really care?
I like my pets to have 'dated' people names like Gertrude and George. 11. Whats the oddest combo (in your opinion) that you've ever liked?
Hmm... I can't think of one that I find odd. 12. Do you go through phases with your names, or do you tend to stick with most of them?
I go through phases... but the phases last a long time. 13. If you're planning on having children, how many would you want?
I already have one child and I would like two more. 14. Is there one name you'd really like to use, but feel like you can't for some reason or other? If so, what name and why.
Amelia because it's the name of a friend and of one of Nate's cousins. 15. Do you like nature/word names or think they're a bit too weird and non-namey?
I like them for the most part. I usually tend to like them as a MN though.

1. What names are you thinking of most today?
Nell a little bit as Helena Bonham Carter just used it and Elle as a nn for Eleanor, my favourite. I've also been considering Austen as a second mn for Lucas after Jane. 2. Do you think its ok to have themed middle names in a sibset if you like all the names?
It isn't bad but I see nothing good about it. However, I wouldn't blink an eyelid if siblings were Lucy Rose and Emma Lily. 3. Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie?
Yes, completely. I've always been drawn to Marlena, despite finding it hideously trashy, as she is a character in my favourite book. 4. Do you think in about 8 years time it'll be ok to call a boy Shiloh?
Possibly, yes. We live in a very sad world. 5. How do you find most of the names you put on your list, or have you just come across them over the years?
Mainly just as I come across them. I've known the majority of them for a very long time but add and take away as my tastes change. Alexandria had been my favourite for several years and now doesn't even make my top 5. 6. How long have you had a name list?
I've been making lists of names since I was about 10 I think. That is the earliest I can remember but I was always interested in names. 7. Do you write fiction/film scripts etc?
Yes, a little. Not as much as I have ideas but I do enjoy creative writing. 8. Whats your least favourite name atm?
Either Gertrude or Edward. I can't stand either.

1. What names are you thinking of most today? None in particular2. Do you think its ok to have themed middle names in a sibset if you like all the names? I suppose it's ok, but I would never do it. It's a bit cheesy to me.3. Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie? Sure4. Do you think in about 8 years time it'll be ok to call a boy Shiloh? I think it would be fine to call a boy that now or in 8 years.5. How do you find most of the names you put on your list, or have you just come across them over the years? I guess I've just come across them in various ways. Some I've loved forever, some are newer additions.6. How long have you had a name list? Since I was about 12 or 13 (so about 11-12 years)7. Do you write fiction/film scripts etc? No, I would like to but I don't have time right now.8. Whats your least favourite name atm? Reagan9. Whats the first combo that comes into your head right now? Miriam Justice10. Do you think pets should have pet names (e.g. Fluffy) or people names or do you not really care? Either works, but I usually go for human names11. Whats the oddest combo (in your opinion) that you've ever liked? Honestly I don't think I've ever really liked anything too odd (at least by BtN standards; lay folks might find my choices odd though).12. Do you go through phases with your names, or do you tend to stick with most of them? Most tend to stick around, but I go through phases of liking certain names more than others.13. If you're planning on having children, how many would you want? Ideally I'd like 4-614. Is there one name you'd really like to use, but feel like you can't for some reason or other? If so, what name and why. No, none that I can think of.15. Do you like nature/word names or think they're a bit too weird and non-namey? I like a few, but they're not really my style in general.

I'm still contemplating Pleasance. I also had to think a little bit to name my two new fish but those names came pretty easily (they're Jack Daniels and Saaphyri Cookiepuss, btw).2. Do you think its ok to have themed middle names in a sibset if you like all the names?
Sure. You could call me a middle name theme advocate.3. Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie?
Absolutely! I think cultural reference makes a great namesake.4. Do you think in about 8 years time it'll be ok to call a boy Shiloh?
It's okay now5. How do you find most of the names you put on your list, or have you just come across them over the years?
My list isn't as well kept as some others, but to answer your question my favorite names are usually reminiscent of some of my favorite movies, songs, books, or people.6. How long have you had a name list?
Since I came to BtN. Again, it's not that accurate.7. Do you write fiction/film scripts etc?
I did when I was younger.8. Whats your least favourite name atm?
I don't know! I've been sitting here for 5 minutes and can't think of anything.9. Whats the first combo that comes into your head right now? Quick!!!
Andrew Simon!! (lol wtf)10. Do you think pets should have pet names (e.g. Fluffy) or people names or do you not really care?
I don't care. Whatever works. I like unusual people names for pets normally.11. Whats the oddest combo (in your opinion) that you've ever liked?
I don't think any of them. They used to be trendier and boring but they were always respectable enough. They've gotten "odder" as time went on.12. Do you go through phases with your names, or do you tend to stick with most of them?

1. What names are you thinking of most today? For boys, I often think about Drew, Milo, Jude, and Reece. For girls, I like Erin, Berit, Julia, Sophie, Tierney, Lily, and Molly.2. Do you think its ok to have themed middle names in a sibset if you like all the names? It depends on what you consider to be themed. If, by themed, you mean names like Faith, Grace, Joy, and Mercy, then no. If, by themed, you mean names that start with the same letter, then I wouldn't mind it so bad, as long as it doesn't become a "requirement" for future kids.3. Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie? Sure. I think that's totally fine.4. Do you think in about 8 years time it'll be ok to call a boy Shiloh? I think it's okay now...I personally prefer it on a girl, but It's not terrible for a boy.5. How do you find most of the names you put on your list, or have you just come across them over the years? I'm not sure I "find" names. I just think about them a lot, and enjoy learning about them!6. How long have you had a name list? I have been thinking about and collecting names since I was about 6 or 7 years old.7. Do you write fiction/film scripts etc? No.8. 1- Claire, Teata, Jordan
2- as long as you like the MNs, use them
3- again, as long as you like the name, use it
4- I think I remember an actor on a short lived show with the name of Shiloh, but it will stay predomenantly female
5- I enjoy reading, learning languages, and work at a school teaching ESL, so I've definately come across a lot of names
6- I've never had a formal name list. When the time comes for me name a kid, I'll come up with one
7- I have done some writing for fun, got started by just wanting to get them out of my head, but they expanded
8-
9- Grace Ann
10- it doesn't matter what or how you come up with for a pet's name
11-
12-
13-
14- Madison has grown on me. I know one student and the baby sister of another with it. I went to UW-Madison, so it also has personal meaning for me. My mom has said she doesn't like it as a name, so I'd use it as a MN. I also have a cousin with a Madelyn (Maddie), so it would also help prevent confusion
15- Depends on the name. Rose, Lily, Ivy, and other flowers are traditional names. Buck is a common nickname here, but not legal as far as I know. Some could sound like the parents were smoking something, like Toadstool or Cloudy. Stormy also sounds out there, but I've heard of it as a name.

-Yeah. Middle names are fine-- just not the first names!3. Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie?
-Yes. I will name my first son Caspian, partially after the Narnia character (I liked the name way before the movies, btw). However, if it's like... Anakin or something, it could get a little odd. I'd love to see it on someone else's child, but not on mine-- and as amiddle name it would be fine (o:4. Do you think in about 8 years time it'll be ok to call a boy Shiloh?- Shiloh is all boy to me right now5. > More traditional names than I'm used to liking. I usually lean more towards the the lesser used/wackier names, but I'm digging usual names later.2. Do you think its ok to have themed middle names in a sibset if you like all the names?
> Why the heck not? As long as it's nothing painfully tacky like Sarah Violin Bow, Marcus Drum Snare and Beth Kazoo Solo.3. Do you think it's ok to name a child after a book/movie character if it's not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie?
> Why do you have to name children AFTER people? Why can't you just get inspiration FROM people? I dearly love the name Hillel, but if I had a son that doesn't mean I'd name him Hillel AFTER this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillel_the_Elder. In fact, I first heard the name back in the mid 90's when I was going through my Red Hot Chili Peppers FanGirl phase and I was obsessed with Hillel Slovak. So that's where I got it from, so what? - doesn't necessarily mean I'm naming any theoretical son AFTER him. Naming a child AFTER someone, to me anyway, is like wishing all the traits etc of the original person on the child. There is no way in hell I'd wish my [again, theoretical] son a drug addiction and eventual overdose. If I were to name my potential daughter Rose after my great grandmother Rosa, that would mean I'd wish her all the traits of my grandmother: kindness, strength, and all that. Or am I way off in what honoring is all about? In any case, I don't like honoring names, so to answer the question simply... actually, no. There is no simple way to answer this for me. Refer back to my previous tangent about Hillel.4. Do you think in about 8 years time it'll be ok to call a boy Shiloh?
> I think you can call a boy whatever you want within reason (no RainbowHappyFunTimes for me, thank you) and it's fine. I hate expectations like that. Who says you can't mix names up? We're all created equally, right? So why aren't names equal then? Can anyone tell I'm on a warpath of sorts right now? (This isn't anything personal to do with the creator of the quiz. More the general idea behind the questions.)

Whats the oddest combo (in your opinion) that you've ever liked?Well most of my combos are odd, probably one with Ghazel in it. Probably Gaia Seraphina Lyric.12. Do you go through phases with your names, or do you tend to stick with most of them?
I occasionally go through phases, I recently went through a nature-y phase because I started loving Joaquin Phoenix =]13. If you're planning on having children, how many would you want?
I'd adopt around 4-6. Yeah, I like the whole Brad-and-Angelina-family-dynamic-idea.

I can't get Vyacheslav off of my mind. It's FANTASTIC!2. Do you think its ok to have themed middle names in a sibset if you like all the names?
Sure, why not?3. Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie?
Definately. I'm all for book characters (and even movie characters). But I'd hope that people wouldn't do something like name their son Edward because omgzztwilight! That's just not a good reason.4. Do you think in about 8 years time it'll be ok to call a boy Shiloh?
I think it's ok now. It's not something I'd personally do (the name screams beagle to me), but I don't see anything wrong with it.5. How do you find most of the names you put on your list, or have you just come across them over the years?
Research of various naming techniques from different cultures. I've recently been digging Russian names.6. How long have you had a name list?
Since I was like 8 or something.7. Do you write fiction/film scripts etc?
Nope.8. Whats your least favourite name atm?
Hannah! I can't stand the name Hannah. I never have and never will.9. Whats the first combo that comes into your head right now? Quick!!!
Iris Philomena. Long time favorite.10. Do you think pets should have pet names (e.g. Fluffy) or people names or do you not really care?
I don't really care, but I think that extremely pretentious people names make great pet names! Like Socrates.11. Whats the oddest combo (in your opinion) that you've ever liked?
Raven Demelza. Raven is so... trendy and kind of trashy, but for some reason I can't help loving it! Or perhaps Franz Ferdinand, just because of the associations. It's really a great combo, though.

1. Thinking of Arabeth/Aribeth today. Wondering what it would mean in Hebrew.
2. Absolutely ok to have themed mn's (Grace, Felicity, Mercy...)
3. Definitely ok to name after characters (Huck, Ishmael, Atticus...)
4. In 8 years?...2016...yeah, Shiloh will be alright.
5. My names come from a lot of...manipulating...I guess you could say. Finding a name that I feel honors certain people, but is still a name I like on its own required some time. Same with finding the themes that were important to me but still liked the names on their own.
6. I've had a name list since about 2002 I guess.
7. No, I don't write.
8. Least favorite name atm is anything with an apostrophe
9. Haleigh-Grace Maegan
10. I think MY pets should have people names. I don't care about anyone else's.
11. My oddest combo...hmm...i don't know. Most of them can be considered odd and not every combo I've asked about was something I liked...and I can't remember if I liked some of the bizarre combos.
12. I stick with most of them, just a lot of rearranging.
13. I want at least 2 kids. Right now I'm leaning towards 3-5. I don't know about a maximum.
14. I'd like to use Elizabeth as a mn, but can't because of a family member I don't like. I'm sure there are others, but I can't think right now. Why, oh why, am I teaching middle school & high school?
15. I like nature/word names in moderation. Mn's are ok. SOME fn's are ok. Just not all the fn's in a sibset.

While Aribeth isn't a Hebrew name, it is comprised of Hebraic elements.Ari=lion
Beth=house (alternatively, Beth can be a short form of Elizabeth, which is an Anglicised form of the Hebrew Elisheva, a name meaning, 'G-d's oath'.)

1. What names are you thinking of most today?
Adrian, Claudia, Charlotte, Drake2. Yes, I think it's ok to have themed middle names in a sibset if you like all the names3. Yes, I think it's ok to name a child after a book/movie character - even if it's really obvious and if you just like the sound of the name and image of the character. (I only disapprove if it's a character with a negative or shallow-sexualized image and the name is unique to the character. Ariel-pronounced-Aerial, Madison...)4. I think it's already ok to call a boy Shiloh5. I have just come across them over the years. A few I deliberately looked for - looking for particular meanings and sounds and uh, 'feelings'6. I've had a written name list for about 5 years, although I have made "scratch pad" throwaway ones for a long time8. Felicity is my least favourite name atm9. Julia Morgana14. Is there one name you'd really like to use, but feel like you can't for some reason or other?
I can't ever use Merrick because my husband doesn't care for it and besides, it's somehow not really a good name for a child of ours. But I'm still gaga about that name.15. Do you like nature/word names or think they're a bit too weird and non-namey?
I like some, but some are too word-y. It depends on how concrete the image is, or how associated it is with larger symbolism, etc. Like, I think Sparrow is kind of dumb, but Lark is not.

I think Sirius is great to use... but then its on my list, so maybe I'm kidding myself thinking kids will think its cool rather than something to tease about. Lol.. 1.Dorothea, Lorraine, Nathan, Jack, Cleo.
2.Sure.
3.I think this is actually better than naming your child after an obvious character, like Scout or Scarlett. However, if you truly love an "obvious" name, there's nothing wrong with that.
4.Probably. I've heard the name on a few babies already, so I wouldn't bat an eye at a boy named Shiloh. Funny, because no one gave the name much thought until Brad and Angelina.
5.I've read baby name books since I was about twelve years old, so I'm a total name nerd.
6.See #5.
7.I write poetry and short stories.
8.Florence, Fanny, Pearl, Olivia, Isabella, Emma. Basically, names that sound "old" and names that are too damn trendy.
9.Dorothea Lorraine.
10.I think people names for pets are kind of stupid. If you're going to give your pet a persons' name, make it a quirky one.
11.Liberty Belle. I heard it on "American Dad".
12.I tend to stick with most of them.
13.Just one.

Wow... I'm loving Lorraine and Cleo from your list... I actually... lol this is weird but I've had Shiloh on my first names list, which was around the time the movie with the dog came out... so I found it there rather than Brad and Angelina's baby and was absolutely gutted when they called her it. The only reservations I had about using it before was that essentially I'd be naming a child after a dog.

Whats the oddest combo (in your opinion) that you've ever liked?Either Elliot Cadence or Phoenix Arwen. 12. Do you go through phases with your names, or do you tend to stick with most of them? There are a handful I never get tired of, but I go through phases with the ones I don't love as much.13. If you're planning on having children, how many would you want?If I have children, and that is a major "if," two or three would be nice. I just may have to do two mns to squeeze in all my favorites. ;)

Old fashioned names more commonly seen in 19th century America... like Ellery, Elliard, Rosella, Sofronia, etc... for use in a story :-)2. Do you think its ok to have themed middle names in a sibset if you like all the names?
Of course it's all right!3. Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie?
Definitely. I think it's okay to name your kid after a popular fictional character as well - if you really like that character that much and it's not someone like Cruella de Ville or Hannibal Lecter (think of the poor kid!)4. Do you think in about 8 years time it'll be ok to call a boy Shiloh?
Personally, I think it's just fine now. Though I don't like Shiloh as a name in general, for a boy or girl.5. How do you find most of the names you put on your list, or have you just come across them over the years?
Over the years, in books, movies, suggested by friends, seen on BTN on this board...6. How long have you had a name list?
Oh gosh, since I began writing when I was about 6 o 7! Though I only began a real names list when I was about 137. Do you write fiction/film scripts etc?
Both, and lots :-)8. Whats your least favourite name atm?
Malachi and Mackenzie9. Whats the first combo that comes into your head right now? Quick!!!
Marion, probably because of the 'm' names above lol10. Do you think pets should have pet names (e.g. Fluffy) or people names or do you not really care?
Not really care. I've personally had pets with both. Whatever you feel fits the pet ::shrugs::11. Whats the oddest combo (in your opinion) that you've ever liked?

I just woke up, and my brain isn't yet thinking about anything. I tend to think about the names Evey and Ptolemy a lot, though.2. Do you think its ok to have themed middle names in a sibset if you like all the names?
I think that middle names are totally fair game, period.3. Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie?
I think it's okay to name a child after a character you love, period.4. Do you think in about 8 years time it'll be ok to call a boy Shiloh?
I think you could probably get away with it now, though I dislike the name enough to wonder why you'd want to. ;)5. How do you find most of the names you put on your list, or have you just come across them over the years?
I end up stealing them away from characters I like, more often than not.6. How long have you had a name list?
I don't keep a formal list, but I've been interested in names at least since I was five, if not earlier.7. Do you write fiction/film scripts etc?
I write stories, yes.8. Whats your least favourite name atm?
My least favourite names for boys and girls tend to be Anna and Joshua.9. Whats the first combo that comes into your head right now? Quick!!!
Rhapsody Silverware. I told you, I just got up.10. Do you think pets should have pet names (e.g. Fluffy) or people names or do you not really care?
I prefer them to have pet names, personally, but I've used both on animals. I'd really love to have a dog named Fido or Rover, though, because it'd be the only one.11. Whats the oddest combo (in your opinion) that you've ever liked?
I don't think I have one particular.12. Do you go through phases with your names, or do you tend to stick with most of them?

Hmmm. Amaterasu Honor or Persephone Ai, just because the names come from drastically different backgrounds. 12. Do you go through phases with your names, or do you tend to stick with most of them?
I tend to stick to the ones I really, really like, but I go through phases with the others. I'm kind of liking surnames right now, just not the obvious ones

Wilfrid, Margaretta, Dougal (but that's because the cat's been sat in the room)2. Do you think it's ok to have themed middle names in a sibset if you like all the names?
Yes. I've often though about using flower middle names for daughters due to the amount of flower names I love.3. Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie?
Within reason, yes. I mean I'd draw the line if your favourite character was a squirrel called Walnut. I love Jane all the more after reading 'Jane Eyre' so that would be a factor should I use it.4. Do you think in about 8 years time it'll be ok to call a boy Shiloh?
I've no idea. I'm no good at predicting these things. 5. How do you find most of the names you put on your list, or have you just come across them over the years?
For all over. Books I read, if I use a name as a character in a story I'm writing they tend to grow on me, people/things I've come across, looking through name sites/books (as long as they're reputable). Everywhere in fact.6. How long have you had a name list?
I've had a name list in my head as long as I can remember. However, since joining here (April 2003) I've had a list in Word/Excel as it's made it easier for posting lists on the boards.7. Do you write fiction/film scripts etc?
Yes, mainly fanfiction at the moment (Pride and Prejudice) because that's all I have time for but I've many, many potential stories floating around in my head.8. What's your least favourite name atm?
Probably Destiny9. Whats the first combo that comes into your head right now? Quick!!!

Absolutely. I often wage internal wars with myself about whether it's okay to use a form of Mary or Alice on every daughter.3. Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie?
Uh, yeah. It's fine.4. Do you think in about 8 years time it'll be ok to call a boy Shiloh?
I don't think it will ever be okay to call a boy Shiloh. Or a girl.5. How do you find most of the names you put on your list, or have you just come across them over the years?
They are mostly names I have known that begin to appeal to me over time. Some I find while skimming databases and some other BTNers mention and some I see IRL.6. How long have you had a name list?
Since I got on BTN. Before that I had sporadic "What My Kids Will Be Named" lists, but they were inconsistent.7. Do you write fiction/film scripts etc?
A little bit.8. Whats your least favourite name atm?
OH LEAST favorite.
Excluding a lot of mindless trendy things, let's go with Sidney and Eliana. Although Matthew comes really close and so does Madison.9. Whats the first combo that comes into your head right now? Quick!!!
Julius Godwin Menelaus. Windchimes.
(The first combo was actually Minerva Maria Cecilia and neither of those are spontaneous. The first spontaneous combo was Sidney Eliana.)

Oh what darling names! Fanny and Molly are absolutely great.I understand people's concerns of using Fanny, but it's such a fabulous name. I'm wondering if people have reservations about the name because they truly think using it will be a detriment to a person's life, or if they shy away from it because everyone else says they should.I do feel quite strongly about it, and if I had a child today, I'd probably use it. (Although, it would be a tough decision because Frances is fighting with Pearl for dominance. Mental name smackdowns, FTW!)
