Finally! New official Czech name popularity since 2016!!!
As some of you May know, Czechia's popularity list stopped updating in 2016, since their social security admin deemed it a violation of privacy to keep posting all of the baby names that had been registered each year.
I still check every year to see if there's any official announcement of baby names in Czechia (though it's usually just unsourced blog posts), but this year there is an official data set from the Czech Office of Statistics!!! https://csu.gov.cz/produkty/detskym-jmenum-loni-opet-kralovali-jakub-a-eliska (100 Nejčetnějších dětských jmen v ČR)
(PS is there a good way to let Mike know about this update?)

I like plenty of names on this list. It's just too many to list them all.
For someone who's not familiar with Czech names, could you tell me a bit about the names on the list? Are there any unexpected names on the list? What names did you expect to find? Any that are considered dated or trendy?
In girls names, I'm seeing a rise in popularity in more international / English-friendly names. I didn't see them very much even in my post-revolution generation because foreign and certain religious names were pretty much illegal in the USSR.
Laura jumped to 9, when before it was 16th. Stella made a big jump from 39th up to 19th in the last ten years. Meanwhile, Tereza is losing popularity, dropping to 8 after being the absolute top name in my generation. I was surprised to see Viktorie climb up to #2!! Ten years ago it was 7th, but it just jumps out at me. Pre-revolution it wasn't used at all and during my year it was 69th.
One thing I wonder is if the number of Ukrainian immigrants is changing name popularity—Meda (not a traditionally Czech name, at least, super uncommon in my experience) went from 130th in 2016 to 24th now!
Eliška hasn't moved out of first place since 2011, so not at all surprised there. I wonder how long it's going to hold strong.
Boys names…
Jakub still going strong as #1 since 2011 (just like girl #1 Eliška). Jan went down to #3 and Matyáš rose up to 2nd place from 7th. Sebastian made a big jump (my mom, who grew up under occupation, definitely would be surprised by that one) from 34th to 16th. Surprised that Mikuláš is going up in popularity—from 37th to 20th. It's associated with St. Nicholas, strong Christmas associations, so I thought people wouldn't be as into that. Not surprised that Karel dropped down in popularity—it's considered a more dated name these days—went from 41 in 2016 to 59/60 in 2024.
While there usually isn't as much of a movement in boy's names, I do see the English-name trend increasing there as well. William went from 136th in 2016 all the way up to 82.

Yay!!! I get it, my country has only done census once and it was 2001 and name data was last updated 2013 (but that may be because of politics).
