Civil War names
At work, I had to go through the Civil War Index, which is an index to the Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana. We only catalogue our surrounding counties in our index, so these names are those of men enlisted in Floyd, Clark, Harrison, and Scott counties in Indiana. I have checked and rechecked these and they appear as they do in the report, but that doesn't mean the report doesn't contain mistakes. They did misspell my great great grandfather's name. At the bottom, I’ve listed first names with surnames if I found them ironic, awesome, or otherwise interesting.Aaron (x13)

Now that I've seen Vetious Shotsinger, I never expect to be unhappy again. Thank you!

Welcome...I thought it was pretty epic. : )

Thank you for sharing this! As one with a heavy interest in history, I find these old name lists fascinating. Craven is interesting, given it's negative denotation. It's like the opposite of a virtue name!

There were a lot of people with surnames as first names and a couple of people in the area have the last name Craven or Cravens, so I'm thinking it might be a family name. But I totally agree with your analysis!

Thank you for posting this! I am a history major and I've been learning a lot about early America lately. It's interesting to see how the culture of the time affected the naming of children. Lots of biblical names, of course, and it was interesting to see some people who appear to be named after the heroes of the times, like LaFayette and George, which I know is a common name but I'm sure a lot were named after George Washington, and there are even two Washingtons which I'd bet money were named for the president. There are quite a few eccentric (to me) names on this list. I wonder if those names were considered eccentric to the people of that time...

Most of the Georges were George W., I'm assuming for George Washington. Other common ones...William H. H. - I'm assuming William Henry Harrison.
Francis M. - I'm assuming Francis Marion "The Swamp Fox". My great great grandfather was the Francis Marion listed in this index and I know that's who he was named for.
Samuel E. W. - There were a couple of these, but I've no idea why.
