For myself, I tried to limit myself just to names that were within the top 500 the year I was born. I picked names of girls I either knew directly during that time ( that still fit the aforementioned criteria ) or just names I know would have been heard of based on the US rankings for that year. I tried to similar myself to names that weren’t just classical and never go out of style, but some are still in there due to their continued popularity for my age group and my liking. I tried to pick some that are still specific to my age group. Names that are already on my long or short list already will be * as an additional marker. But like I said, a fair number are just already on my long or short lists.
