After some time away from BtN with some real life craziness (of the good variety!), I'm back for another Top 10!I did my first Top 10 in February 2010 and besides a few guilty pleasures that have fallen out of favor, not much has changed. I guess that's a good sign? :)Ladies
Elisabeth nn Ellie
Madeleine
Naomi - recent addition. SO's grandpa calls me this more than my real name and it's growing on me!
Catherine nn Cate/Catie
Hermione - yep, I still love it.
Natalie / Renata
Leah / Leia (lay-ah)
Antigone
Rose
Susannah - I like Sunny as a nnGents
Gabriel
Ignatius
Tiberius - this is SO's favorite
Joseph
Alden
Orion - If SO gets ones I do too :)
Benjamin nn Ben
James
Damien - fading though, I just don't like it like I used to
Mark - a new one...not sure on its staying power yet
Elisabeth "Ellie" has been my favorite for a long time. It honors my godmother, my sister, and me and is such a classic beauty. Ellie is sweet and cute for a little girl, but not too cloying for a woman. Unfortunately I found out that SO's cousin will be using Ellie on her daughter due this year...maybe 5 or 6 years will be long enough so that there's room for another Ellie in the family! Some Combos:

So now you must commit to having eleven boys and eleven girls so you can use all of these stunners. Or, if you combine them then it's only five and five, with runner up pets. See how generous I can be? Fionan is new to me and I'm loving him. Thanks for the pronunciation guide. Loic has been a personal favorite since I saw the movie "Indochine," with Catherine Deneuve. There was a baby baptized as Jean-Baptiste Loic. Heaven. How sweet are Mabel and Clementine? All of them, really. When you have "sharn" as you pronunciation guide for Sian, you're not actually intending us to pronounce the "r," correct? You're using it in the English/UK way, I presume. Just checking. :-)

I'm pronouncing the R in Siân. As I understand it, it's a cultural dialect in parts of Scotland, but I do know that Siân is also pronounced like the first syllable of Shannon. The database links to Fionán as Fionnan, if you're interested.I've never seen Indochine, but I'll see if I can Netflix it.I'm coming to having most of my boys. We may have to triple name the girls, but I'm sure I can manage.Thanks.
vote up1
Interesting! I never considered the Scottish point of view. I've only ever heard it as "shahn" like the Irish boy's name Sean, or sometimes as "shan" (as in Shannon). The "r" is new to me, but just as valid. Thanks! Indochine is very long and very French. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I did enjoy it. A good friend of mine is Vietnamese so we were glued to it. If you do see it, I hope you like it, or at least like looking at Catherine Deneuve in gorgeous silks.

You are making my head spin. Do you keep track of all this data? Or are you doing it for our benefit, to see how our tastes change over time? Either way, kudos for all the work!I generally avoid these diaries because I found the more I participated the more I started to tire of my "favorite" names. I've now come to the point where I can't even remember what they were. So here's a list of what I call my current top ten names. I suspect the feminine ones will change the most:1. Frederica / Freda (these are in no particular order)
2. Joan
3. Ursula (hmm, they are definitely getting "heavier" sounding)
4. Gobnait
5. Margaret / Mairead (is that cheating?)
6. Blaithin
7. Eimear / Emer
8. Edelmira
9. Inez / Ines
10. Elsa / ElsieGP of the day: Hepzibah1. Peter

8. Cornelius

10. BernardGP of the day: HannibalFear not. These are not intended for future children. I am old enough to be free to love names for their own sake.
vote up1
Spartz started this in 2008, saying she wanted to keep track of how her names changed over the course of the year and invited everyone to do so along with her. The last couple years I have counted up all the data to put together a BTN popularity chart (2012's is here: http://www.behindthename.com/bb/baby/4356914), but it wasn't the original intention.

My virtual hat is off to you. Thanks again for keeping this going. :-D

Not sure if Allegra is in my Top Ten this time around, but it's been there before. It's so fun.
I went by Nell(e) for a short time when I was still trying to decide what to cal myself. Still like it.
I like Romy, but wouldn't use it personally because it looks so much like Romany to me.
Martin "Mars" -I've never considered "Mars" as a short form for Martin and now I'm just kind of grinning all over about it. I'd love to meet one.
Whitney & Calix are awesome too.

Aw. I had settled on Freya as a name for my cat. But dh kept getting it wrong, as Freda, which is a family name for me so I used that instead. Freya is so airy and elegant.I'm waiting for my niece to get pregnant. Her dh is part Japanese, as is their surname. I have Ren (m) / Wren (f) waiting to suggest to them. (Wren is a family surname of ours so it's a 2-for-1 name for my niece, sort of.) Hey. Wren should have been on my top ten list for a girl. . . .

Isidore is my dad's name, and hence I'm biased. I would dislike Christian anyway, but that's besides the point :P Isidore's a great name.
Emmanuel is awesome - better than Alec!
I like both Matteus and Etienne.
Love Solomon!I adore Astrid. It's just so awesome! I also like Ophelia. I wish I could like Linnea, but I just don't, and I don't think I ever will. I don't know what it is about it...

Vivienne is so charming! There's nothing wrong with Vivian, but it looks and feels plainer and less classy than Vivienne, which is all spark and glamour. Vivienne looks like the name of an glamerous, golden age era actress; Vivian looks like your schoolfriend's mum's name.
Aurora is very pretty.
Susannah is lovely and traditionally elegant.
Isabel is okay, but I prefer Isabelle.
Ada is quite nice too. From your boys' names, I like Theodore, Nicolas (but not Cole), Benjamin (but not Benji), Jasper, Isaac and Charles (and I do like Charlie as a nn too).
