BTN's top 10 (post your top 5's)
Delphi_Blue did this back in October, and I thought it would be interesting to do it again and compare it to the last results.List your top 5 names for both girls and boys (so 10 total), and either tomorrow night or Wednesday morning I will compile the statistics and come up with a BTN top 10. To make things easier for me, it would be awesome if you could change the subject to "your user name's top 5" (eg. penguiny7's top 5).Despite Delphi_Blue saying it would have been easier to tally if she wouldn't have grouped different spellings, I'm still going to group different spellings. I don't want to end up with a Catherine and a Katherine in the top 10, when some other name could have made it.This would work better the more people who post, so get posting! :DHere's the old thread if you're interested:
http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=3034479&board=baby(ETA: Yes, I'll post the results.) :)

VioletGah! The girls was tough. I put a few names, then remembered Violet, which is probably top 3 material, so I had to get rid of one, which was tough, since I love all of the names so much. But anyway, I looked at my old list, and their pretty similar. In the boy's list Felix, Benjamin and Jasper replaced Noah, Anthony and Damien (Anthony was close to making my current list). On the girls, Daphne, Eve and Scarlett replaced Juliet, Octavia (which is the name I had to kick off the current list) and Dorothy.

vote up1
You noticed?Lol. Was it that obvious? All of the Cullen's names are fabulous. I remember when I first read Twilight and Bella mentioned how they have such weird, old fashioned names, I was a little taken aback. I didn't find them weird and could see them at any age. I dunno, I'm just a name-nerd like that.
vote up1
Agreed on all accounts :-)I'm a fan of the series as well. Well, I'm a fan of the first book - my sister lent the rest of her books to friends so I haven't read any of the others yet :/ I'm sort of hesitant to because I'm told they have a lot to do with Jacob and I don't really like him much. I can't wait for the movie. It's going to be so awesomely b-movie bad :-) GP all the way.
Gah - back on names! It's the book that helped wear me down on Jasper haha I'd seen the name a bunch here on the ops boards and was thinking it was alright but then I read the book and began to see it everywhere and eventually it became a favorite!
vote up1
HaThe first thing I did was check the popularity on all of them and then I wanted to write Ms Meyer a letter about how "All of the Cullen 'children's' names were still in common usage except for Rosalie".
vote up1
Lol! I originally wrote my reply as a long thing, which included how I searched the popularity and only Rosalie wasn't on the list (although it was on the list in the 1980s when the humans in the book were born)In the 80s:
Rosalie ranked 921
Jasper ranked 661
Emmett ranked 853
Alice ranked 335
Edward ranked 57Oh, how unpopular they were. Especially Edward.I mean, if she wanted names that could at least be dated to the time they were born, she could have chosen *goes off and finds names that fit the characters*:
Blanche (for Rosalie)
Otto (for Jasper)
Emil (for Emmett, it's even really similar)
Mabel (for Alice)And I don't know what for Edward. None of the names seem to fit him, and if they do, they have too much popularity.

My system isn't the most efficient, but it will give me the least amount of headache. I'm using paper to tally names. So they're not in alphabetical order and it takes longer. But I get a headache from scrolling up and down all the time. I figured I'd save myself the trouble. :)

That's what I did. A paper tally. Lol. And then I put them into the comp in alphabetical order then coloured them by number of votes.Have fun with it :)

EdurneEdurne is intriguing. I'm adding it to my long list.Your top 5's are stellar, especially Theodosia.
vote up1
Thank you :-) It was actually another BTN member that turned me to Edurne, you know - I'm thinking that's how it must go with this name! lol Theodosia is stunning isn't it? I used to bounce back and forth between it and Theodora (which is beautiful too) but eventually decided that Theodosia sounded just as strong but more feminine than Theodora.
vote up1
Plus, the nn Dosie is toooooo cute.

This message was edited 7/28/2008, 7:01 PM

vote up1
Ahaha! That's what I was thinking! Dosie would be excellent for a little girl (just too adorable!), and then as she got older she could go with Theo or Sia for a more mature sound.

It's so versatile :-)

*adds Theodosia to PNL*Wow. What a beautiful name. It even uses some of my favorite letters. Just one question-- is it theo-do-see-uh or theo-do-shuh?

I used to be so obsessed with the name Gwyneira! I loved it so much , I wrote an entire novel - just so I give a character that name! It's an okay story, but looking back, I was a bit crazy :-) Well, the novel is crazy too. It's a futuristic, cloning-apacolypse... blargh.
So, yah. Pointless story but I'm in a pointless mood haha

5. JulietWoah. Wow. Woah. Only Juliet stayed on the list, and it got bumped from 1 to 5. I didn't even notice my taste vary that much. I think that I did the last one as more of names I'd use, and I was a bit over-cautious back then. Now the only name on this list that I'm a tad worried about using is Kreszentia. But if my husband ends up liking it, I'd use it in a second. Constantine has been a favorite since 1st grade. I don't know why it wasn't on last year's list.

Fox (g) and Dana (b)? Seeing those two as a sibset would make me laugh...but I still think I'd love it.

I find it quite interesting that on your girl's list, you list a few names I consider quite masculine (Fox, Rowan, Vaughan) and on your boy's list you list lots of names the average population might find feminine (Mackenzie, Dana, Emlyn) [Note: I find Mackenzie, Dana and Emlyn to be masculine]
